Venturing into Zanskar Plains |
| |
Falling south of Ladakh, via the Suru valley we enter the vast expanse of Zanskar. It's a small region tucked between the Himalayan & Zanskar ranges. The large wide open plains surrounding Padum which is the capital of Zanskar, opens a beautiful frame of lush green paddy fields, colourful mountains and people in their traditional attires. The geographical isolation and the esoteric nature of Buddhism practised here have enabled its inhabitants to preserve their identity. The famous Hungarian
explorer Cosmo De Koros was one of the first European travelers to visit the region in 1826-27 AD. Within the mountain ramparts of the valley stand some ancient yet active monastic establishments. The Monasteries of Karsha, Zongkhul, Sanni, Stongde & Phugtal are among the most revered ones in Ladakh. Besides from Padum one can undertake numerous challenging treks into Ladakh and upper Himachal regions.
