Sikkim

Sikkim was known as one of the "last Shangri-La" before it came under Indian control due to it's remoteness, beautiful landscape, varied flora and fauna and ancient Buddhist Monasteries. Sikkim was closed for foreigner for several years and now you can visit this beautiful place with a permit. Till 26th April 1975 Sikkim was an independent kingdom and it came under Indian control followed by albeit treaty and it became 22nd state of India. The Sikkim state has divided into four districts of North, East, West and South Sikkim.

  Around Gangtok: There are many places to see around Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim state The Namgyal Institute of Tibetology was established in 1958; built in traditional style has large collection of Mahayana Buddhism Books, embroidered silk thangkas and other arts and crafts. You can buy Books on Tibetan Buddhism, Art and Crafts. Tsuklak- khang is impressive Gonpa with beautiful paintings and large collection of religious books and it has also beautiful woodcarvings. Enchey Gonpa was built in 1909 and it is famous for its monastic festival in January or February.
   
  Rumtek Gonpa is 24 Kms. away from Gangtok, which is the richest monastery of Sikkim and head of Karmapa School of order of Tibetan Buddhism. The recent structure of the monastery is constructed accordance with the design of head monastery of the Karmapa in Tibet. There are beautiful chortens, paintings and chorten with the relics of 16th Gyalwa Karmapa.
   
  Phodong Gonpa is situated in North Sikkim belongs to Kargyutpa School of order. The original Gonpa was founded in 1740 and monk community was established. Presently there are around 70 monks in residence. There is a Nunnery place near the monastery, which was established in 1844.
   
  Khecheopari Lake- Kechopari is a beautiful place popular among the trekkers; there is a holy Lake in Kecheopari and Monastery near the Tsojo village.
   
  Yumthang Valley lies 140 kms. away from Gangtok with beautiful rhododendrons in April May and hot springs.
